Review: Somber Island by T. Lynne Tolles

Phoebe was a pain in the ass for her father and for her sisters. I felt sorry for her because everybody thought she was a monster just because she was sick when she was younger and she had a limp. One day, her father decided to send her in Newfoundland, to work as a servant for Nathaniel Jacobs. Phoebe was really scared, but she didn’t know that her father’s decision was the best for her future.

Nathaniel Jacobs was a strange man. He had a sunlight affliction (I mean, that’s what he told Phoebe) and he had to drink blood and eat meat every night. Now that was really creepy! Especially when Phoebe started to have dreams with Emma, Nathaniel’s ex. That woman was everywhere in the house, even though she was dead. Her pictures, her things and her wedding dress were making her alive. She was so angry with Phoebe, she actually tried to kill her every night in her dreams. But she wasn’t alone, a beast –a wolf- was after her and he was protecting Phoebe (let me say that this wolf had a big role in the story and he was an unexpected character that I loved so much).

Nathaniel and Phoebe had a beautiful relationship, they were perfect for each other. He was hiding a secret, he was a VAMPIRE and Phoebe found out. But she wasn’t scared, she understood him and loved him just the way he was. I really want to point out that Nathaniel is the first vampire that gave me a good impression. He wasn’t a blood sucker, a bad vampire or a serial killer. And he loved Phoebe too.

Emma was the real danger when she switched her attention to Nathaniel. Maybe killing him was a better idea than killing Phoebe. She was such a bad character! At the end of the book Emma was a real bitch and I hated her so much.

Somebody said on Goodreads that this book sounds like Jane Eyre (with vampires). I haven’t read Jane Eyre yet, but I had the honor to read this book. And let me tell you that the story is well-written, original and romantic. If you like books with vampires, witches or werewolves, you’ll have to read ‘’Somber Island’’. It is definitely one of the best books I have ever read! Now I am looking forward to read more books written by T. Lynne Tolles.

So, what do you say? 😀 Would you like to read ”Somber Island”?
